What a wonderful time I had in Croatia! It was great to meet so many fans and to find that you all like Inspector Rebus and my version of contemporary Scotland!

It is fascinating to me that although my stories are rooted in Edinburgh, the themes resonate with other countries and cultures. Perhaps that is because crime fiction deals with 'the human condition', examining age-old questions of moral responsibility and good versus evil.

Croatia faces similar social and economic problems as Scotland - though at least your team made it to the World Cup. You also know all about crime - especially as you were robbed by Brazil in the opening game!

I hope to visit Croatia again some day. Meantime, keep reading - and support your wonderful bookstores!

Ian Rankin
